Sean T. Connaughton
Sean T. Connaughton is Secretary of Transportation for the Commonwealth of Virginia serving in the cabinet of Governor Bob McDonnell. He oversees seven agencies with over 10,000 employees and combined budgets of more than $5 billion.
Prior to joining the McDonnell administration, Connaughton served as Corporate Vice President, Government Affairs for the American Bureau of Shipping, one of the world's leading ship and marine classification societies
He was named U.S. Maritime Administrator by President George W. Bush in 2006 As Maritime Administrator, Connaughton was head of the Maritime Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation, and responsible for the daily management of that agency and its promotional programs for the marine transportation industry. He served as Chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors from 2000 – 2006.
Connaughton is a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He has served the U.S. Coast Guard as both a commissioned officer and as a civil servant in the Office of Marine Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection. He has a Master’s degree from Georgetown University, and a law degree from George Mason University. He lives with his family in Northern Virginia.
