US Navy 7th fleet officials say that a sailor died Wednesday onboard the USS Essex while the ship was at anchor off the coast of Bali.

The name of the male sailor is being withheld until family has been notified.

Officials say the sailor died from blunt trauma injury during a daily check of the ship’s weapons systems. After the injury he lost consciousness – the ship’s Fleet Surgical Team rushed to help but were unable to revive the injured sailor.

Spokesman for the 7th Fleet, Anthony Falvo, says the cause of injury and resulting death is being investigated.

The USS Essex is a multipurpose amphibious assault ship. The Essex and the Stethem arrived in Bali for a port visit earlier this week.
