PPG USCA Lands New NOAA Contract

Published Dec 16, 2010 2:14 PM by The Maritime Executive

PMC's Great Lakes team has landed a significant contract to supply coatings for the newbuilding of a fisheries survey vessel for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA awarded this newbuild to Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC), Fincantieri's American subsidiary, in Marinette Wisconsin, USA. The vessel will be the fifth in a series of state-of-the-art Oscar Dyson-class ships built for the agency and will measure 208 ft (63.5 meters) long and 50 ft (15.2 meters) wide. The high-tech ship will be equipped with a full suite of modern instrumentation for fisheries and oceanographic research. The customer had exacting requirements on this project. The specification was for a system to withstand the rigors of new construction activities, which would also allow for minimum touch-up before delivery. PPG provided the optimum solution: AT 385 and AT 240 systems providing the durability for both the newbuild operations and the long-term performance to prevent corrosion after delivery. PPG has supplied products for other NOAA vessels, and it was this experience and successful track record with PPG PMC proven systems that secured this contract, which is expected to run through to spring 2012. The project includes coatings applied to: Exterior hull coating systems include:

  • Amercoat 302H – Inorganic zinc
  • Amercoat 385 – Multi-purpose epoxy
  • Amercoat 229 T – Gloss epoxy acrylic topcoat
  • Amercoat ABC4 – Antifiouling

Ballast and Void tanks:

  • Amercoat 240 – Low-VOC universal epoxy

Potable water

  • Amercoat 133 – 100% solids epoxy coating NSF approved
