Port of Grimsby To Undergo Massive Dock Expansion

The Port of Grimsby, the UK’s busiest car-handling port, is to undergo a dock expansion with a huge investment of £25m. The expansion is the largest ever investment in the town’s docks.

Dock owners, Associated British Ports, said the money is to be used to construct a new terminal to handle an increase in car imports. The port already had 635,000 vehicles pass through the docks in 2010.

There will now be an enterprise zone in the port, as well as new jetties built to allow larger vessels to berth. The new facility will also handle boats carrying up to 3,000 vehicles; while it is now restricted too an 800-car cargo due to the old lock gates.

Work will begin in early 2012, with the first ships expected to berth in the fall of 2013.
