• Somalia: U.S. Navy Stops Drug Smugglers in Gulf of Aden

• Greece: Greek Port Workers Suspend Strike
Oct 19, 2009 — Dockworkers at Greece's main port of Piraeus suspended their three-week strike on Saturday (10/17). But plan to renew the labor action on November 2 if their unions cannot reach a deal with the government. The strike has left dozens of ships unable to offload their cargo, thousands of containers piled up, and as Greece's Kathimerini reports, cost Greek businesses some 30 million euros.

• Somalia: Chinese Ship Hijacked in Indian Ocean
Oct 19, 2009 — Earlier today (10/19) it was reported a Chinese bulk carrier was hijacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean. Now, the European Naval (EU) Force reports the ship has been located and pirates have been seen onboard. Further reports say the ship was hijacked 550 nautical miles northeast of the Seychelles and some 700 nautical miles off the east coast of Somalia. There are 146 people onboard.

• Canada: Canada Investigating Rare Human Smuggling Case
Oct 19, 2009 — In what is being called the first suspected case of human smuggling off Canada's Pacific coast in a decade, 76 young men were taken off of a freighter on Friday as it was about to dock on Vancouver Island. The young men are currently in detention while immigration officials examine their status. It is believed they are Tamils from Sri Lanka. Canada is home to one of the world's largest expatriate Tamil communities, numbering near 300,000.

• Cameroon: Cameroon Military Saves Fishermen from Pirates
Oct 16, 2009 — The Cameroon Defense Ministry announced Thursday (10/15) that the country's military stopped pirates from seizing a fishing vessel off the Bakassi peninsula on October 10. The Cameroon military killed 4 suspects and captured 3 others who were wounded. Two additional suspected pirates are missing.
