• Ferry Sinks off Zamboanga, Philippines
Nine dead in Super Ferry 9 sinking
Super Ferry 9 sank in Siocon Bay near Zamboanga Peninsula early Sunday morning, leaving at lease nine passengers dead and more than 30 unaccounted for.
Nearly 1000 passengers and crewmen were headed to Iliolo from the port of General Santos Saturday morning.
The ferry was reported in distress around 3:30 a.m. Sunday and was tilting for hours off the Bay before it sank around 8:30 a.m.
Gilberto Teodoro, Defense Secretary and chairman of the National Disaster Coordinating Council, reported the captain sent out distress signals that the ship was listing and shortly after, search and rescue efforts were sent from the Armed Forces and PCG vessels owned by the shipping company.
Aboitiz Transport System, the ferry owner and operator, reported Super Ferry 9 was carrying 220 tons of fuel oil. The Maritime Industry Authority has since grounded the 10-vessel fleet of ATS, following the sinking.

All 19 crewmembers of MV Hera rescued by coast guard after ship sinks one day after Super Ferry 9
The Philippines coast guard has rescued the crew of a cargo ship that sank off Eastern Samar province only a day after the Super Ferry 9 disaster.
The 4,189-ton, Panama-owned MV Hera was en route to China from Papua New Guinea carrying logs. After experiencing engine trouble, Hera began to take on water late Sunday. The crew sent out a distress call and immediately transferred to a life raft.
Two helicopters from the 505th Search and Rescue Squadron spotted the lifeboat. The coast guard also requested rescue operations from the naval forces and Philippine Air Force.
