High Speed Ferry and Merchant Freighter Collide in Straits of Gibraltar

Published Jan 19, 2012 8:28 AM by The Maritime Executive

The same night the Concordia ran aground, another passenger vessel found itself in trouble in the Straits of Gibraltar.

The Millennium Dos, a high speed ferry, was carrying 174 passengers, 37 vehicles, and 4 freight units when it was struck by Maltese-flagged merchant freighter, New Glory. The high-impact force resulted in a massive hole to be cut in the starboard side of the ferry.

The ferry was still able to dock at its intended destination of Ceuta off Africa’s coast. Ferry Company, Acciona, announced that the safety of the ship was not compromised as it continued to the harbor. Only 1 person onboard needed to be evacuated after suffering a right leg fracture and cut to the head.
