Haitian Migrants Found Dead After Boating Accident Off Cuba's Coast
At least 38 Haitian migrants, including 21 men and 17 women, have been found dead after their boat sank off Cuba’s eastern tip after fleeing their country. 87 other people from that boat have been rescued. A search headed by the Cuban military for more possible survivors is still ongoing.
The boat was spotted only 100 meters off shore after it began taking in water and got stranded at sea by the Cuban Coast Guard.
Fatal accidents involving Haitian migrants are not uncommon, unfortunately, and are usually caused by rusty and overcrowded boats. The rescued passengers have been moved to an international migrants’ camp at Point Maisi and have been given medical assistance before they will be repatriated back to Haiti under Cuban immigration procedures.
