Video: HMAS Adelaide Scuttled off Australian Coast

Published Apr 13, 2011 12:11 PM by The Maritime Executive

The Australian Navy scuttled the decommissioned, 33 year old HMAS Adelaide on Wednesday, in front of more than 10,000 onlookers.

The frigate, sunk near Avoca beach, had been a sore subject for several environmental groups. Despite multiple objections the courts approved the ships sinking, but under the condition that it be thoroughly decontaminated first.  This wasn't enough for environmental groups, who say they fear the lead paint is a pollution risk and that the wreck will add to beach erosion.

Government officials say the new artificial reef created by yesterday’s sinking will generate millions of dollars in revenue for the New South Wales state.

Sixteen separate explosions blasted through he hull of the ship as fireworks erupted overhead. In just two minutes the ship disappeared under the surface.

The scuttling was delayed by nearly an hour when a pod of curious dolphins surrounded the vessel.  Officials coaxed the dolphins out of the area and waited for the pod to clear before proceeding with the scuttling.
