Massive Hull Acts as Sail in New Cargo Ship Design

Vindskip, introduced by Lade AS, is a patented hybrid merchant vessel for sustainable sea transport.

Through an innovative concept, Vindskip is meeting future demands for fuel economy and emission control through technology. Fuel savings with this design is estimated to be 60%, with an estimated 80% reduction in ship emissions.

Vindskip uses its hull as a giant sail, which helps harness a lifting force to pull the ship along. Lade AS also believes this design could eventually be used for cruise ships of any size. Engines will still be required, and monitoring software will calculate the wind conditions and best route for the ship. It would use a LNG-powered electrical generator for the remainder of its energy requirements and to get going from a stop.

Vindskip meets all MARPOL Annex VI Regulations requirements, as well as the new chapter 4 to Annex VI on Regulations on energy efficiency for ships:

The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) for all ships.

The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships.
