A former Newport News shipyard executive and his wife were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Robert Klosterman, 64, is suspected of killing his wife, Rebecca Klosterman, 57, and then himself. They were found dead in their home on Peace Haven Drive on Sunday.

Police said a man now believed to be Klosterman, called emergency services around 10 a.m. and asked for officers to come to his residence. When officers arrived, there was no answer at the door. They entered the home and found the bodies.

Klosterman was a US Navy veteran who served in Vietnam and eventually rose to become the first commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis from 1995-97.

He joined Newport News Shipyard as the manager of operations for the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center, or VASCIC. He retired from the position in 2004.

Virginia court records state the final hearing on the couple's divorce was scheduled for this past Tuesday.
