North Sea Chopper Goes Down
Oil rig helicopter crashes off the northeast coast of Scotland. A Super Puma owned by Bond Offshore Helicopters crashed into the North Sea on return from BP’s Miller platform approximately 35 miles off the coast of Crimond. The accident killed 14 passengers and two crewmembers on Wednesday April 1st. Two ships the BIBBY TOPAZ and the VIGILANT were dispatched to work the site. As of Monday April 6th, all of the 16 victims have now been recovered. The wreckage of the aircraft was located by the Bibby Topaz about 14 miles offshore. Seven bodies and the cockpit recorded were recovered from the chopper. Some of the victim’s families are calling for a public inquiry into the crash.
