Glen Paine, Executive Director of MITAGS-PMI announced that Northwest Maritime Academy in Seattle will offer the Institute’s U.S. Coast Guard approved enclosed lifeboat training.

“We chose Northwest Maritime Academy because of its lifeboat training equipment includes modern release and retrieval systems,” Paine said. “They are the only West Coast facility that can provide STCW approved lifeboat training utilizing enclosed lifeboats, which will benefit those training at PMI in Seattle.”

A Seafarers International Research Center report concluded that tight vessel schedules allow little time for mariners train for lifeboat drills and this cause an unfamiliarity with survival craft equipment that be catastrophic in emergencies. The report went on to say that empowering mariners with the proper knowledge and training it can improve safety and save lives.

The IMO issued mandatory requirements for Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) Code in 1996 and mariners must be SOLAS compliant and demonstrate proficiency with survival craft by January 1, 2017 as well as with the LSA Code and SOLAS III/1.5 to no later than July1, 2019
