Maersk boxship on fire off Port Klang

A fire started in a container carrying “dangerous goods” onboard the CHARLOTTE MAERSK in the Malacca Strait after leaving Port Klang bound for Oman. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) said it received a call at about 10.10pm on Wednesday and rushed a rescue ship and speedboat to the scene at about midnight.

Fire-fighting vessels were sent to help put out the fire. There are no reports of any injuries to crew members or pollution, and the vessel’s engines and thrusters remain operational.

An amphibious Bombardier aircraft and additional rescue boats were on standby to provide aid.

As of Thursday evening, efforts were still on going to put out the blaze.

Tug Boat and Barge Collide: Update
Bodies of missing tourist found in Delaware River

The bodies of two Hungarian tourists left missing after a Ride the Ducks amphibious vehicle collided with a barge and sank were discovered Friday.

Dora Schwendtner, 16, and 20-year-old Szablcs Prem were among 37 people flung into the Delaware River Wednesday afternoon after the tour boat they were in was hit by the 250-foot barge The Resource.

The boat had been listing in the river after an engine fire left it disabled when the accident happened.

The Resource struck the Duck boat at the stern causing it roll onto its side and ripping the roof open. The boat then sank to the bottom of the Delaware in 40-feet of water.

A salvage crew hoisted that sunken ship from the riverbed around 1:30 p.m. Friday. As the ship was raised, the body of a young man surfaced at the scene, later identified as Szablcs Prem.

Earlier Friday morning, around 5 a.m., Schwendtner's body was discovered by fishermen near Snyder Avenue -- about two miles south of the crash site.

Schwendtner and Prem were visiting the Philadelphia area as part of an exchange program with a West Chester, Pa. church.

The Duck Boat’s mate and deck hand reported that radio calls to the tugboat pushing the barge went unanswered.

The crew of the tug Caribbean Sea included a master, a mate, an engineer and two deck hands, the NTSB said in a news release. One mate exercised his Fifth Amendment right and refused to meet with investigators.

Other vessels in the area reported hearing the duck boat’s radio calls.

The National Transportation Safety Board is continuing its investigation.
