• Obama's TSA Nominee Withdraws Nomination
Jan 20, 2010 — Erroll Southers, the Obama administration's nominee to head the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), has withdrawn his nomination stating his appointment had "become a lightning rod for those who have chosen to push a political agenda at the risk of the safety and security of the American people." Southers was chosen for the TSA position last year, but his confirmation has been held up in the Senate.

• Admiral Calls for Heightened Maritime Vigilance
Jan 19, 2010 — In an editorial on Monday (1/18), retired Navy Admiral James A. Lyons points out how and why we must remain proactive in dealing with terrorist threats to our naval vessels, foreign and domestic ports, inland waterways and the broader maritime environment. Admiral Lyons says, "This is not a law enforcement issue. It requires all the elements of our national intelligence agencies working with those of our allies to defeat the threats."

• Police to Use Federal Funds to Improve Port Security
Jan 17, 2010 — It is being reported that the Baltimore County Police Department is planning on using federal funds to purchase a variety of equipment to improve security at the Port of Baltimore. The nearly $1million in funds are earmarked for purchasing tactical response boats and dive and search equipment.

• Bangladesh: Bangladesh to Improve Ports and Security with India
Jan 17, 2010 — The Prime Minister of Bangladesh announced on Saturday that the ports of Chittagong and Mongla would soon be developed to aid the flow of goods to and from India, as well as for use by Nepal and Bhutan. The Prime Minister also said that roads and railways would also be improved to a help support he more efficient flow of commerce. In addition, during the media event, she also stated that her country and India had written treaties on security and terrorism and cross border crime.
