• Crew Members Dead from Possible Food Poisoning
Master of the Arionas tanker informed authorities of the deaths of three crew members last Thursday.
Operated by Evangelos Marinakis-led Capital Product Partners and Marshall Islands-flagged Greek tanker was en route from Cyrpus to Rotterdam with over 27,000 tonnes of fuel when the incident occured.
Capital Ship Management, the vessel's Piraeus-based manager, confirmed the deaths but did not disclose further information regarding the cause, names, or positions of the deceased. However, European reports suggest food poisoning was the suspected culprit.
A doctor and gendarmerie were dispatched to the tanker, which changed course and diverted to the French port, La Havre.
• Ship Loses Propulsion in Strait of Juan de Fuca
A container ship in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, in transit to Washington state from Alaska, was shut down after crew noticed smoke coming from the number one engine's turbocharger.
Horizon Tacoma was headed to Tacoma from Dutch Harbor when the crew decided to shut the engine of the 712-foot container ship down late Tuesday night. An emergency response tug stationed at Neah Bay, Wash. was dispatched and at the scene within 15 minutes.
The vessel was three nautical miles north of Neah Bay and accepted tow from the Hunter and Foss tugs to Tacoma, where the engine will be repaired.
