JIME President to Speak at IMarEST
IMarEST Evening Technical Meeting: Japanese Global Environmental Protection
Protection of the global environment from greenhouse gas (GHG), and harmful emissions by the maritime sector are an urgent issue in marine engineering. Koji Takasaki, President of the Japan Institute of Marine Engineering (JIME) and Professor, Laboratory of Engine and Combustion, Kyushu University, will be a guest of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) on Tuesday 14 September when he will speak about the activities of JIME in relation to global environmental protection at an evening technical meeting at IMarEST Headquarters.
“We look forward to welcoming Professor Takasaki to our headquarters in Coleman Street in the City of London, and to a fascinating and highly topical lecture,” says Dr Marcus Jones, Chief Executive of IMarEST. “The evening technical meeting is open to members and non-members alike.”
Professor Takasaki explains in a synopsis: “Drastic reductions in fuel consumption by traveled kilometer and ton cargo have to be achieved to minimize CO2 emissions. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced new emission regulations for marine engines that will drastically reduce NOx and SOx emissions in designated coastal areas.
“To solve these global environmental problems, JIME is continuously supporting and encouraging projects in cooperation with JASNAOE (The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers) and JIN (Japan Institute of Navigation).”
Professor Takasaki will introduce some research themes included in the Japanese national project for GHG reduction from ships (2009-2012) with the target of 30% reduction of CO2 per ton-mile of cargo from international maritime transportation, which is equivalent to 1% reduction of global CO2, and also the challenge to meet the IMO regulations for NOx, SOx and PM emissions from ships.
The evening will start with tea at 17.00hrs and be followed by the presentation at 17.30hrs after which there will be a networking reception. Attendance is free for all IMarEST members by emailing [email protected] (£17.50 for non-members, online registration and payment available) or by telephoning +44 (0)20 7382 2600.
