Ferry Sinks in a Myanmar Delta, 10 Confirmed Deaths
Another ferry has sunk, this time in the Irrawaddy Delta in Myanmar. Currently, there are 10 confirmed deaths. Three people are still missing, and 72 passengers have been safely rescued. Six out of these 72 people have been hospitalized.
Local news reports from that area state that the Pathein Thu ferry sank Tuesday as it was about to dock at a jetty near Ngapudaw. It had been sailing from Pathein on the Pathein River, about 85 miles west of Yangon.
Boat travel is commonly used in Myanmar, as their immense river deltas and coastal regions are largely unreachable by roads. Accidents are unfortunately also common.
The official cause of the accident is now being investigated by authorities. Further details will be provided as they become available.
