Pan American Victory Leaves Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet

Published Jan 13, 2011 1:16 PM by The Maritime Executive

Ship is first of two to be removed from California MARAD Ghost Ship Fleet since revision of DOT’s ship disposal policies for U.S. West Coast tonnage.

The Pan American Victory has been towed from the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet to the BAE Systems San Francisco Ship Repair, where it will be cleaned of marine growth and loose exterior paint. After cleaning, the Pan American Victory will be towed to Brownsville, Texas, where it will be dismantled and recycled at All Star Metals, LLC.

The ship is the first of two set to leave the Suisun Bay facility. The Earlham Victory is also scheduled to be drydocked and cleaned at the BAE Systems shipyard and recycled at All Star Metals, LLC. It is expected that both ships will be towed out of the San Francisco Bay area after drydocking before the end of the calendar year.

MarEx Editor’s NOTE: The MARAD announcement confirms previous advice that the vessels would be removed from the Suisun Bay fleet, reversing years of policy that resulted from California’s unusually unreasonable requirements with regard to the vessels and their handling.
