Tanker collides with ship, spilling crude oil off Singapore coast
The Malaysian flagged tanker MT BUNGA KELANA 3 collided with the MV WAILY, a St. Vincent and The Grenadines flagged bulk carrier, early this morning (May 25) in the Singapore Strait, about 8 miles from Singapore’s coast.
It is estimated the MT Bunga was carrying 18,325 barrels of oil or 769,650 gallons of oil. The spill caused a 4-mile slick south of Singapore’s coast.
Cleanup teams from Singapore and Malaysia acted quickly to keep the spill from reaching shore. They have deployed oil dispersant, containment booms and skimmers to collect crude oil on the surface.
Traffic in the busy strait has not been affected.
