The Impact of the Ebola Virus Disease

Published Sep 18, 2014 1:17 PM by The Maritime Executive

Your attention is drawn to precautionary measures described in IMO Circular Letters No.3484 on 2 September and No.3485 on 10 September, regarding the Ebola virus disease (EVD). The letters provide information and guidance, based on recommendations developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), on the precautions to be taken to minimise risks to seafarers, passengers and others on board ships from EVD.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the border restrictions imposed by some Governments have made it increasingly difficult for Lloyd’s Register (LR) surveyors in the area to travel safely. We have reports that service suppliers are experiencing similar difficulties and delays in attendance.

Safety and the health of our surveyors and clients is our first priority in our daily work. Accordingly, LR is monitoring the latest information and travel advice relevant to the situation in West Africa. We are providing information and advice to our surveyor teams and relevant updates to clients.

In cases where you need to arrange either classification and/or statutory surveys in the affected countries in West Africa, we would appreciate your earliest notification so that the best and proper arrangements can be made.

This situation is continually under review and is subject to change. Your local LR office is best placed to work with you to provide a solution and to discuss potential alternatives.
