Oceans 2050: Future Oceans-2013 Future Business

In 2050, what will the state of the ocean and the ocean business community be – and what must be done between now and then to ensure that both are healthy and productive?

Join other senior ocean industry representatives in tackling these overriding questions at the agenda-setting “Oceans 2050” workshop preceding the Sustainable Ocean Summit (SOS), 22-24 April 2013, Washington, D.C.

Leadership companies will compare priority concerns and map out the critical pathways to ocean industry success and sustainability for the half-century ahead by considering:

• What drivers, trends, barriers, and opportunities will affect ocean use, access and license to operate over the next four decades?

• What scenarios do responsible ocean industries envision for the state of the seas and their industry operations in this time frame?

• How can scenarios be integrated into a long term, multi-industry forecast for a healthy and productive global ocean and its sustainable use and stewardship by healthy, responsible ocean businesses?

• What is the roadmap for fostering and guiding ocean business community collaboration and leadership to achieve these goals?

The half-day workshop will launch and design the longer WOC Oceans 2050 process to more comprehensively chart the collective ocean industry course for sustainable seas and responsible ocean business. This process will continue beyond the SOS 2013 with the outputs driving WOC strategy, programs and priorities.

SOS sessions will focus on many of the more specific priority issues affecting the future of ocean industries, including: high seas policy, marine spatial planning, sound, invasive species, waste disposal, the Arctic, ecosystem services, climate change/sea level rise, and financing sustainability innovation and technology.

The SOS is designed for leadership companies from the diverse ocean business community, including: shipping, oil and gas, fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, offshore renewable energy, ports, dredging, mining, cables, pipelines, marine science, engineering and technology, the maritime legal, financial and insurance communities, and others.
