GEA Heat Exchangers Supplies Closed-Circuit Coolers for the Finnish Icebreaker Sisu

Published Aug 13, 2013 10:45 AM by The Maritime Executive

In May of 2013, the Estonian ship repair and conversion company SRC Group AS awarded an order to GEA Heat Exchangers for 36 GEA F-tube coolers. The coolers are intended for installation on the Finnish icebreaker Sisu, to profitably transfer the heat emitted by the ship’s generators and propulsion engines. The order was granted to the company GEA Heat Exchangers OÜ in Estonia. The company GEA Maschinenkühltechnik GmbH will manufacture the coolers in Germany. Delivery is scheduled for October of 2013. The new F-tube coolers will replace old equipment that was originally delivered for the ship in the mid-1970s by GEA Luftkühlergesellschaft Happel GmbH & Co.

GEA F-tube coolers are characterized by great thermal performance in compact space. Their compact structural design is the result of the use of elliptical tubes (“GEA F-tubes”) with cross-sections that facilitate effective flow with low pressure drop. Rectangular fins are slid over these tubes, which are metallically connected to the core tube by dip galvanizing. The slight air-side pressure drop enables low operating costs for the fans.
