Several key personnel moves and executive job openings announced in a busy week for MARAD. USMMA Superintendent retires and Lauren Brand hired to lead MARAD's South Atlantic Gateway Office.

VADM Joseph Stewart Announces Retirement from U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

Vice Admiral Joseph D. Stewart, Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, has announced his retirement from government service. VADM Stewart's career spanned over 44 years of public service to the United States as a Marine Corps officer and member of the civilian Senior Executive Service.

"After 10 years at Kings Point and over 44 years in service to our nation, Kathy and I are looking forward to retiring from public service," said VADM Stewart. "I am thankful for the opportunity the Kings Point community afforded both of us during our time here. My memories of the Regiment, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and all the friends of Kings Point will have a lasting impact on my life. This truly was my most memorable assignment."

"Joe Stewart's impact on Kings Point will far outlast his tenure on campus," said Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton, a 1983 graduate of the Academy. "Vice Admiral Stewart and his wife Kathy have devoted their lives to the principles of liberty and freedom, and we are grateful for their years of dedication to our nation."

Prior to his tenure as Superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, VADM Stewart served in the U.S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Major General. VADM Stewart held command billets beginning at the platoon level and culminating as Deputy Chief of Staff for Installations and Logistics.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, is operated by the Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration. It trains men and women as merchant mariners, and all graduates are required to serve either in the U.S. maritime industry or in the U.S. Armed Forces.

MARAD Names Lauren Brand to head South Atlantic Gateway Office in Miami, FL

July 7, 2008: The Maritime Administration has named Lauren K. Brand to head its new South Atlantic Gateway Office in Miami, Florida. Ten Gateway Offices have been established in the Nation's largest ports to place a team of intermodal maritime experts "on the ground" that work with headquarters staff, state and local authorities and a broad range of port, shipper and carrier stakeholders to cooperate on projects. The goal is to work on reducing congestion, improving freight and passenger movement, and address environmental and community challenges in the ports, intermodal connections, and key freight and passenger corridors. The South Atlantic Gateway Office will provide support in South Carolina, Georgia, eastern Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Prior to this appointment, Lauren was the Senior Director of Business Development with the Canaveral Port Authority in Cape Canaveral, Florida, the second largest cruise port in the United States. She brings a wealth of experience in passenger cruise and freight business development, freight forwarding, stevedoring, and warehousing, as well as working with State government and Metropolitan Planning Organizations to address intermodal challenges. Lauren holds a Bachelor's degree in Transportation and American Association of Port Authorities certification in Professional Port Management.

Maritime Administration Seeks Director for Houston Gateway Office

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration is searching for a director for its new Gateway Office in Houston, Texas. The Gateway Offices provide the Maritime Administration with a day-to-day presence throughout the Marine Transportation System. The new office will work with state and local authorities and a broad range of port, shipper and carrier stakeholders to cooperate on projects, identify federal and state funding, and work on environmental and community challenges in the ports and their intermodal connections.

With more than 200 million tons of cargo moving through the Port of Houston and a new state of the art cruise terminal, the Houston Gateway Office will provide interface with the cruise industry, as well as other segments of the maritime industry. Motivated candidates with a background in the maritime industry, strong leadership, communication and management skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others are encouraged to apply.
