On Sunday, the Russian general cargo ship City grounded on a breakwater near the port of Sakata in Japan. The hull was breached, causing the vessel to list, and the crew of 18 Russian and Bangladeshi seamen were evacuated by helicopter.

There were no reports of injuries or pollution, and local authorities are investigating the accident thought to be caused in part by stormy weather in the area.

Russian media report that the vessel left the Russian port of Nakhodka and arrived in Akita prefecture, located not far from Yamagata, where it was partly unloaded. After that, the ship left for South Korea but ran aground.

The Panama-flagged vessel is managed by Russian company Jessy Shipping.
