Overseas Shipholding Group & Seafarers International Union Share Honors
“Friend of the Port” Award
The Seamen’s Church Institute of Philadelphia & South Jersey (SCI) will honor Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) and the Seafarers International Union (SIU) with its Friend of the Port Award for their contributions to the economy of the Delaware Valley at its Fall Gala November 19, 2010. The theme of the Gala is the Year of the Seafarer - 2010 and will be held at the Downtown Club in Philadelphia.
The Rev. Canon James D. Von Dreele (pictured), SCI’s Executive Director said, “OSG’s decision to build 12 product tankers at the Aker Philadelphia Shipyard has significantly impacted the economy of the region with several thousands of family sustaining jobs at the shipyard and beyond. In addition, OSG provides tanker lightering services for the major petroleum refineries along the Delaware River in partnership with the SIU to provide safe cargo transfers so critical to the petroleum industry and the environmental health of the Delaware River and Bay. In this Year of the Seafarer – 2010, SCI celebrates the tremendous contributions of seafarers the world over.”
Accepting the award on behalf of OSG will be Eric Smith, VP OSG America. David Heindel, Treasurer of SIU, will represent that organization.
THE SEAMEN’S CHURCH INSTITUTE OF PHILADELPHIA & SOUTH JERSEY (SCI) HAS A MISSION OF HOSPITALITY, SERVING PROACTIVELY, WITHOUT PREJUDICE, THE HUMAN NEEDS OF SEAFARERS IN THE PORTS OF THE DELAWARE RIVER.
