Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has signed an agreement with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) to develop next-generation vessel monitoring and support systems using artificial intelligence technologies. The project is part of the company's on-going drive to take advantage of digital technologies.
The system will be based on real time short-cycle and big data input which will be integrated and analyzed with the aim of preventing accidents and equipment failure.
MOL is already enhancing its vessel routing technology by providing a hazard map layer onto its voyage planning technology, provided by Weathernews. The system adds selected hazard information including notice of past incidents and lessons learned, displays of hazardous sea areas and regions subject to special regulations. The system enhancements are designed to make it easier for crewmembers to recognize potential hazards along the routes they are sailing and to free them from the need to collect too much pre-voyage information.
Additionally, real-time, actual measured weather information will be shared between MOL vessels.
MOL is also developing wearable information technology devices for crewmembers. The "Project for Establishing a System to Visualize Onboard Environments utilizing ICT" is expected to enhance crew safety awareness and skill levels. It is envisaged that crew training will be conducted using head-mount displays, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. These remote support systems will also be used during onboard maintenance and repairs.
MOL and MES participate in an autonomous ocean transport project. The research consortium includes the National Institute of Maritime, Port and Aviation Technology, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), Japan Ship Technology Research Association, and Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen).
